A character is a fictional person, creature, or being within a work of literature. The characters in a story are the people who experience the plot and events of that story, and as such it is vitally important for them to be well-rounded and built up. The building up of a character's personality and traits is called characterization. A story's characters, if well-thought-out, can even overcome a deficiency in plot and make the story enjoyable. However, a story with badly-written characters, even if it has an excellent and complex plot, will not be nearly as enjoyable to read.
